Chinese New Year Malaysian Supperclub London 30, 31 Jan 1 Feb

Celebrate Chinese New Year in London at Malaysian By May Supperclub

It’s been ages since we hosted a supperclub and probably the last time was when we were at Darjeeling Express, just before the Netflix show aired.

Our ever popular Malaysian Chinese New Year Supperclub is back in 2020! For one night only, we are hosting an intimate supperclub at an elegant private home in Marylebone.

On the menu is the most requested New Year Salad “Yee Sang” (or also called Loh Hei). This is the interactive salad where everyone has to get involved in tossing the salad while shouting out auspicious things. The meal will be 8 courses of Malaysian and auspicious Chinese dishes featuring prawns, fish and possible some rendang too.

Venue: A private home in Marylebone (nearest tubes Oxford Circus, Baker St, Regents Park)

Dates:

    • Thursday 30 Jan 2020
    • Friday 31 Jan  2020
    • Saturday 1 Feb 2020

Welcoming the Year of the Rat 2020

Chinese New Year Malaysian Supperclub London

25 Jan is Burns night but coincidentally, it is also the first day of the Year of the Rat. In Malaysia, we celebrate Chinese New Year for 15 days. As per tradition, homes are cleaned before the new year (cleaning during the new year is bad luck) and new brightly coloured furnishing are bought. Everyone gets new clothes and shoes too. On the first 3 days, Malaysian will visit family and friends at “open houses” where there is free-flowing food and drink all day. Kids and unmarried youngsters are given Red packets filled with money for luck. It was always a great game to compare our Ang Pow stash at the end of the day. Inevitably, we will end up at a friend’s home where there is a mahjong or card game on.

Chap Goh Meh – the Hokkien New Year celebration

In the Hokkien communities in pockets around KL, Penang and other states, the 15th is the most important day. They call it Chap Goh Meh (literally, the 15th night). Besides celebrating the end of the New Year celebrations, it also has a romantic backdrop. In the olden days, this was the day that unwed girls were allowed out of their home. With their chaperones, they will dress up in all their finery and stroll through town. These girls will bring along mandarins to throw into the river in the hope of finding tru love. Today, this has been turned into a competition where boys in boats will compete to collect as many of the mandarins as possible. You can see this along the Esplanade in Penang.

Who comes to our Malaysian supperclubs?

We have had guest as young as 1 month old to great grand mothers. We’ve had a guest fly in from Florida for the weekend and some regular guests who fly in from Germany. As attending a supperclub is one of the “Things to Do in London” we get visitors who found us online and turn up on a whim too.  We love to welcome Londoners who bring their friends to experience our Malaysian hospitality. You can come in a group or by yourself as we get a lot of single diners and our communal table settings are very friendly.

Testimonial: Here is what one our supperclubber guest had to say about our events:

“We had such an incredible time at May’s supper club – wonderful food in such a wonderful atmosphere. It really added to the evening having May explain the history of Malaysian cuisine so we knew why we were eating what we were eating. I cannot fault the evening, May and her team went above and beyond to produce some really exciting dishes – we didn’t want to leave! We will most definitely be returning soon. Thank you May. Dawn ”

Note: We are also available for private parties too, drop us an email for more details.

Extra Date: Chinese New Year Supperclub 16 Feb

It’s the Year of the Horse! We love celebrating Chinese New Year as it always involves lots of parties and a lot of food. For the Year of the Horse we are planning a special Chinese New Year Feast ( but no horse meat on the menu 😉 )

Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days in the first month of the lunar calendar. In London, the Chinese community celebrate this with a big festival in Trafalgar Square (Sunday 2 Feb) and around London Chinatown. In Malaysian, Chinese New Year is celebrated with a 2 day public holiday and we usually visit family and friends in their homes. It is a Malaysian custom to have an open house where you invite your friends of all races to visit, eat and party. Children love Chinese New Year as they will receive lucky red packets full of money when they visit family and friends.

The Year of the Snake 2013

This year Chinese New Year falls on 10 February 2013 and it is the beginning of the Year of the Snake. What will this year bring for businesses, love and world peace?

year of the snake

Here are some predictions of eminent and not so eminent sources around the web.

From the wise word of Paul Ng, a geomancer in Canada:

This year is composed of “water snake” year, “wooden tiger” month, “metal ox” day and “earth rat” hour. While its year and month are in conflict, its day and hour connect. The year would begin with many uncertainties but end up on a high tune. There is an over-abundance of wood and fire, which become negative elements for the year. Elements of “earth, metal and water” would serve the year better.

The five star analysis of this  sign is a very turbulent one. It would bring the world to extremities – good or bad. Its nature is “earth”. Countries in both south and north would do better than those in the east or west. China would control to lead the world’s economy. Western countries would continue to suffer from economic instabilities.

Business involving “earth, metal or water” would do well. Those involving “water or earth” had to work much harder. This is a year of instabilities, especially in both Middle East and Southern Europe.

You can read his full report here.

According the CLSA Feng Shui index which they have been producing for over 19 years, here is what they have to say about the markets

It will be a good year for the Hang Seng, particularly in the first half and March is flagged as a standout month. It’s interesting that March is also the month that the U.S. Congress has to deal with the debt-ceiling. After June the ride gets much rougher and more volatile.

On Health, Relationships and Work for the year, they say :

If you were born in the year of the Rooster, Dog or Ox (Cow), it is going to be a great year.

If you are a Pig, Goat (Sheep), Tiger or Snake, it’s best to fast forward to 2014. Interestingly, those with the same birth sign as the year sign invariably have bad years.
